The Big Book of Earth 0010 (unfinished)

Vardø, Norway

Vardø is the eastern-most town in Norway. Thanks to local superstitions of monsters, and the nuclear situation, it has become extremely isolated from its closest cities. The Window here exists a good distance from town, behind a giant boulder in a fairly extensive ditch; on capable feet, the trek would take about an hour. Vardø's buildings are very colorful and distinctive -- and it has a fair amount of business to offer, despite its problems. Despite its cheerful exterior, however, the town's citizens are very wary of anything -- or anyone -- new, and can be on the paranoid side. Most citizens keep off the streets when at all possible, as if frightened that something will snatch them up. As it's happened before, one can't really blame them. Still, the citizens will deny the possibility of monsters, magic and the like, probably to help them cope with their isolation.

The Rune Guardian

Vardø, and its ancestral beginnings, has been defended for a very long time by the family line currently known by the surname of Urdahl. This story has not been passed down in legend, only through the family, and thus the citizens of Vardø have no idea the "misfit" and "strange" Urdahl family has been keeping them safe since time immemorial. For more information on what abilities that gives the Urdahl line, see here.

Magic

Very much a driving force in Norway, and likely the rest of the world, magic exists, but you'd be hard-pressed to find a citizen who'd admit it. Not many have seen it in action. The magic typically found is more primitive and rune-based, but some races have refined it into elegant submission, such as the dark elves. Even though most worlds would call it primitive, the magic found in Vardø is extremely strong and ever-present, practically humming through the air at all times. The Urdahl family has always believed that this magic -- from whatever mysterious source -- is the cause for the constant flow of Norse creatures on Vardø's doorstep.

Miscellaneous

Alcohol
Owing to the fact that everyone is crowded upward, or downward, the types of alcohol available are somewhat narrow. In Vardø, the recent drink of choice is a brand of gin called Sletten's, which has a particularly strong juniper taste (and a hefty kick).
